The Joys of Eating Yogurt
After many attempts at trying to lose weight, the struggle is almost over...if I can keep plenty of yogurt in the fridge, I'm destined for success! The creamy supermarket varieties help me make it through breakfast and lunches, especially when I'm on the go. I know that I can't go wrong with packaged yogurt, when it's difficult to make the right food choices. The main thing to remember is that those calories and sugars do count, so I do read the labels and choose the low sugar/low carbohydrate flavors. When the weekend comes, we head over to our favorite yogurt parlor for some custom healthy yogurt goodness, with all the wonderful toppings you could ever imagine! I have to have mine with whipped cream and a cherry on top!
Over the years, I've developed a passion for yogurt. First of all, it's really good for you because it promotes colon health. There are many delicious varieties to choose from, but the most important advantage to eating yogurt is that it can be instrumental in weight loss and weight control. How can this creamy stuff do that? The active cultures in the yogurt will work with your body to remove waste and help your digestive system do its job. I know some lactose intolerant individuals who’ve been able to eat yogurt without too many problems and they, too, will rave about the benefits. They do make a lactose free yogurt. If you love ice cream, but have difficulty controlling your portions of it, try eating the frozen yogurt varieties, but go easy on the toppings. That’s where the calories can really add up. I’ve noticed that the market for frozen yogurt self-serve parlors has increased, with these businesses popping up everywhere! The frozen yogurt can get to be expensive, but it’s definitely worth treating yourself to it for the taste, your good health, and the atmosphere of the lovely yogurt parlors.
When in doubt…eat yogurt! If you’re trying to diet and having a hard time making healthy choices at restaurants and fast food places, ask for yogurt. Lots of places carry it like McDonalds, I know for sure. Another thing you should do is to try to incorporate eating yogurt into your daily food plan. I like to have yogurt for breakfast and lunch, at least four to five times per week. However, I will only eat the grocery store custard style yogurts for this purpose. The reason why is because it is much easier to manage the caloric intake when the portions are already set and you can read the labels to know exactly how many calories and total nutritional value you are getting. This is especially important for dieters who are watching their fats and sugars. The main point to remember here is that all yogurts are not created equal! Even within the same brand, you really have to read the labels to distinguish between the super sweet dessert style yogurt and the low carb healthier varieties. They all contain the live cultures, but the sugars can get you in trouble if you’re sensitive to it. Also, the brands that have the actual fruit in them tend to be sweeter…better tasting, but higher in calories and sugar. I avoid these. I’ve noticed that I can have many flavor choices in the low carb varieties without sacrificing taste and still get the colon cleansing effect that I need. I generally look for the store brand low carb yogurt. The flavors that have 10 or less carbs are better for me. If you lead a very active lifestyle and know that you are going to burn those sugars and carbs with a strenuous workout, then by all means go for the most delicious Yoplait’s. They’ve got the flavors going on, but the sugars are high! When I really get serious about cleansing, I opt for the Dannon Activia brand because it’s got extra fiber in it and you can imagine what it does!
